Study conducted by the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and the Italian Fondazione Bruno Kessler explored the persuasive abilities of AI compared to humans in debate situations. Participants were divided into groups to debate on controversial issues in four setups: human vs. human, human vs. AI, human vs. human with access to personal opponent information, and human vs. AI with personalized data. The findings revealed that AI, when personalized with information about opponents (age, gender, race), significantly outperformed humans, increasing agreement with its arguments by 81.7%. Even without personalization, AI showed a 21.3% increase in persuasiveness. This study was conducted between December 2023 and February 2024 and the research was supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation and the European Union.
